Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Gombe State into a major livestock hub through strategic infrastructure development and policy reforms.

The governor gave the assurance while receiving the National Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Malam Sanusi Abubakar, who was in the state on a two-day technical visit to evaluate ongoing interventions and engage stakeholders.

Describing L-PRES as a key development partner, Governor Yahaya commended the project’s contributions to the state’s livestock sector, particularly the recent approval of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital for Gombe.

He said the intervention aligns perfectly with his livestock transformation agenda, which aims to unlock the economic potential of the sector for job creation, food security, and rural development.

In his remarks, Malam Sanusi Abubakar praised Governor Yahaya’s visionary policies, highlighting the 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone as a model for agribusiness, animal healthcare, and innovation.

He also commended the governor’s ongoing efforts to revitalize the 144,000-hectare Wawa-Zange Grazing Reserve, citing its importance in promoting ranching and curbing the challenges linked to open grazing and herder-farmer conflicts.

“We’ve seen the tremendous work your government has done in providing water infrastructure at the Wawa-Zange Reserve, which has long hindered productivity,” he said. “L-PRES is ready to build on these efforts with more investments in feedlots, milk collection centres, roads, and other infrastructure critical to sustainable livestock production.”

Abubakar also hailed the governor’s proactive embrace of the Private Veterinary Practice (PVP) Programme, noting that Gombe is among only four states selected to pilot the initiative.

He confirmed that, based on the state’s outstanding performance, Gombe has been chosen to host a Modern Veterinary Hospital.

The new facility is expected to complement the ongoing construction of an Ultramodern Abattoir and the International Livestock Market, serving as a regional centre for veterinary diagnostics, disease surveillance, and research.

The L-PRES coordinator further urged Governor Yahaya, in his capacity as Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum, to lead efforts in scaling up livestock modernization across the region.

Earlier, during an inspection of the abattoir project site, Abubakar expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and the contractor’s commitment to delivering on schedule.
