Former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has rejected accusations that he is trying to take over the responsibilities of the current Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Supreme Ibitomi, Okiro addressed these claims on Saturday in Abuja.

He stated, that “we have noticed reports suggesting that Okiro is trying to interfere with the current I-G’s work.

“These claims are completely untrue. It’s disappointing that some people would spread false information to damage Okiro’s reputation.”

Okiro explained that a recent meeting of retired police chiefs was organized to discuss the required retirement of several senior officers.

He emphasized that his participation was simply in the role of leader for the group and not an attempt to influence the current police leadership.

According to him, this gathering shows the group’s dedication to the welfare of police officers and the integrity of the police force.

He praised Egbetokun, calling him a smart, well-educated, and experienced officer who does not need outside influence to perform his duties.

Okiro expressed his belief that the rumours stem from individuals unconcerned with the issues faced by retired police officers.

He assured that the group would keep working to support and advocate for their colleagues still in service.

“We will not be distracted by negative stories,” he declared.

“Our priority is to make sure the rights and dignity of both current and retired police officers are upheld. These claims will not stop us; in fact, they will strengthen our determination to fight for justice and fairness for all.”

He urged the public to ignore unfounded accusations and instead focus on the real issues affecting the nation.

Okiro confirmed that the group will continue to contribute positively to the Nigerian Police Force.

“We encourage all Nigerians who care about justice and security to support our initiatives aimed at enhancing the welfare of police officers,” he said.
