Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has approved a new policy that allows female workers in the state civil service to take six months of maternity leave when they are pregnant.
The decision was announced during the launch of a new food and nutrition plan in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, on Tuesday.
The governor explained that the state government plans to send a bill to the Kebbi State House of Assembly to make the maternity leave policy official.
He also shared some initiatives to tackle the problem of malnutrition among children in the state.
To support these efforts, the governor has agreed to provide funding requested by UNICEF.
The state government will donate a significant amount, while local government councils will also contribute funds.

This money will be used for nutrition programmes aimed at helping malnourished children.
Gov. Idris emphasised his commitment to improving child nutrition and ensuring that everyone has access to healthy food, which is essential for a better quality of life in the state.
A representative from UNICEF, Mr. Michael Jumah, highlighted that the funds will be used to buy important nutritional supplies, such as vitamin supplements and special foods to help treat malnutrition in children.
Additionally, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abba Sani-Kalgo, praised the governor for his dedication to ensuring food security and better nutrition for the people of Kebbi State.
