The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Ebonyi State and the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) at the weekend conducted free medical screening and treatment to over 5,000 patients.

The screening and treatment include; patients with breast and cervical cancer, prostrate, diabetes, arthritis, ulcer and others.

The free medical outreach which also featured blood sugar check, blood pressure check, dental check, eye check, deworming and nutritional talk, took place at Eke Ajah Market in the local government.

Among those who benefited from the exercise included the aged, youths and journalists.

DUFUHS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jesse Uneke and the Chief Medical Director of AE-FUTHA, Prof. Robinson Onoh said the gesture was to celebrate the Minister of Works, David Umahi and founder of DUFUHS who turned 62 at the weekend.

Uneke described Umahi as a gift and blessing to Ebonyi State and Nigeria and commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing him as the minister of works to drive the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ on road infrastructure revolution.

He said Nigerians are witnessing quality road infrastructure built to stand the test of time under Umahi as minister.

The vice chancellor opined that the free medical outreach was to appreciate Umahi for his service to humanity and the country.

On his part, the Chief Medical Director of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Prof. Onoh said Umahi deserved to be celebrated because of his immense contribution to the development of the state and the county in general.

“The minister of works has done a lot for humanity, he has done a lot for Ebonyi State, he has done a lot for Nigerians and I guess, one of the things we should do for him, is to celebrate him.

“And that is what we have by organizing this free medical outreach to also touch lives. We have to give better health to individuals”, he said.

One of the beneficiaries of the medical outreach, Akpa Njoku, an eye patient commended the organizers of the medical mission and prayed God to bless them

He disclosed that the eyeglasses he was given at the medical outreach after being examined and treated, were far better than the ones he was given in the hospitals he visited in search of solutions to his eye problem.
