As part of the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the federal government has designated Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by his Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on July 14, 2025.
The minister emphasized that the holiday serves as a sign of respect for the late president’s dedication to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic progress, and his lasting impact on governance and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari dedicated himself to Nigeria with integrity and a steadfast commitment to the unity and advancement of our great nation.

“This public holiday allows all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the principles he stood for,” the minister remarked.
He encouraged citizens to use the day to honour the late president’s legacy by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity, in line with his vision for a prosperous and cohesive Nigeria.
As previously announced, national flags will be flown at half-mast during the seven-day mourning period starting Sunday, July 13, 2025.
