In a renewed push to enhance road safety and traffic management across Delta State, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has pledged strong collaboration with the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) following a strategic meeting with the agency’s Director General, Hon. Dr. Benjamin Essien Okiemute, and key directors.

Held at DESTMA headquarters, the high-level meeting brought together transport union leaders and traffic officials to address the growing need for efficient traffic regulation, accident prevention, and better coordination among road users. NURTW representatives expressed full support for DESTMA’s operational vision and proposed the launch of regular road safety sensitization programs specifically targeted at commercial drivers across the state.

The union also called for the installation of visible caution signs in strategic traffic hotspots to guide drivers and reduce reckless driving. In response, DESTMA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement and unveiled new measures to strengthen its operations. Among these is the deployment of two 90-ton and two 30-ton towing trucks to swiftly evacuate broken-down vehicles and eliminate potential road hazards.

Okiemute, while addressing the stakeholders, charged the Director of Operations, Engr. Francis Edema, to handle public complaints concerning abandoned vehicles and ensure traffic flows seamlessly on major routes. Members of the public were encouraged to report such incidents through the dedicated hotline: 08030951826.

The Director General also issued a strong advisory to transport operators to carry out proper checks on passengers’ luggage to prevent the transportation of weapons and contraband. He warned against illegal parking and loading activities that disrupt traffic flow, stressing that such offenses will attract strict penalties moving forward.

Reiterating DESTMA’s alignment with Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s vision for a safer and more organized Delta, Dr. Okiemute emphasized that the agency remains fully committed to using every available resource to safeguard lives and property on the roads.

With mutual understanding and cooperation now in motion, both DESTMA and NURTW have resolved to jointly raise the bar in traffic regulation, promote responsible driving culture, and create a safer road network for all Deltans.
