The Nigerian Senate has recommended the payment of N200 million as compensation to the family of two-year-old Ivan Onose Omhonrina.

Ivan tragically lost his life during a raid conducted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Okpanam, Oshimili north local government area of Delta State on July 13, 2023.

The child was fatally struck by a stray bullet at his mother’s shop on Edoz Plaza, close to Sweet Spirit hotel along Okpanam road when NDLEA operatives stormed a nearby suspected drug den.

His younger brother, Eromonsele, also sustained injuries, with a bullet grazing his eye.

Both children were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for emergency treatment, but despite medical efforts, Ivan succumbed to his injuries.

The matter was brought to the floor of the Senate during plenary following a petition presented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, Senator Neda Imaseun.

In a solemn moment, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Ivan before adopting the committee’s recommendation for a N200 million compensation to be paid to the bereaved family.
