Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has flagged off the 2025 wet farming season with the distribution of subsidized fertilizer to farmers in the state.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Gombe, Gov. Yahaya announced the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes (200,000 bags) of NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer to be sold to farmers at a subsidized rate of ₦27,000 per bag down from the market price of ₦44,000.
The governor said the intervention represents a 150 percent increase in quantity compared to the 2024 wet season, reflecting his administration’s sustained efforts to enhance food production and secure state’s place in Nigeria’s food security agenda.
“This gesture underscores our commitment to making agriculture affordable, accessible, and productive,” Gov. Yahaya stated.

To ensure transparency and prevent diversion of the subsidized fertilizer, Gov. Yahaya directed the state Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with security agencies and civil society groups, to monitor the distribution process down to the unit level.
“We shall ensure that the fertilizer reaches the grassroots by strengthening the monitoring system,” he said.
“Anyone found culpable of diverting these inputs will be dealt with decisively.”
The governor also highlighted other key agricultural initiatives under his administration, including partnerships with the federal government, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank on projects such as NG-CARES, RAAMP, L-PRES, ACReSAL, and Sasakawa, among others.
He further mentioned the Agro-Livestock Development Zone and the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park, which houses Premier Seeds Nigeria Limited’s seed-processing facility, as part of broader efforts to position Gombe as a hub for agro-commerce in the North-East.
He urged farmers to utilize the fertilizer effectively and observe weather advisories to safeguard their investments, while also calling for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
Reiterating his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on encroachment of grazing reserves and cattle routes, Gov. Yahaya warned traditional rulers against complicity in land disputes and vowed to act on the recommendations of the farmers/herders dispute resolution committees.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Dr. Barnabas Malle, thanked the governor for prioritizing agriculture despite economic constraints, saying the consistent subsidy on inputs reflects the administration’s resilience and commitment to the farming population.
