Female students of the University of Calabar have raised an alarm, complaining about the dilapidated nature of their hostels, making them unsafe for habitation.
Many female students who spoke to our reporter during a visit to the university’s campus expressed apprehension about their safety, saying the hostels lack basic amenities, while the environment around the hostels is unsafe.
They recounted that many female students have suffered from electric shocks due to the exposure of naked electrical wires, while the hostels are usually flooded as a result of leakages in the roofs.
“We spend time scooping water whenever it rains, even as our textbooks and other valuables have often been affected by the flooding.
“Besides this, the environment around the hostels is very untidy, giving room for dangerous reptiles and other animals to lurk around.

“Our living environment is not conducive and very risky for human habitation, as dangerous animals often surface, threatening us,” a female student in one of the hostels who pleaded anonymity stated.
She disclosed that recently, a female student nearly died from an electric shock.
Another female student who also pleaded anonymity said that “I have personally lost my handouts and costly books. My mates have similarly suffered the same fate. We’re not safe in this hostel.”
The student appealed to the university authority to de-silt drainages and other water outlets around the female hostels.
Many of the female students spoke glowingly of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, for her efforts at infrastructural development in the school.
However, they appealed to her to visit the ‘Malabo Republic’ that houses the female hostels and see their living conditions.
