Tottenham Hotspur fired manager Ange Postecoglou on Friday, even after the team won the Europa League.
The 59-year-old Australian guided the club to its first trophy in 17 years last month, when Tottenham defeated Manchester United to clinch the title.
However, he was let go after the team had its worst performance in the top league since the 1976-77 season, finishing just above the relegation zone with 22 losses.
In a statement released shortly after his firing, Postecoglou expressed pride in his time as manager.
“Leading one of England’s historic football clubs and working to restore its glory is something I will cherish forever,” he said.
“Sharing that journey with those who truly care about this club and witnessing its impact on them is unforgettable.”

He mentioned facing many challenges along the way and dealing with skepticism about what could be achieved.
Before the final, Postecoglou talked about changing how people view the club and believed that his success would help ensure Tottenham wouldn’t have to wait another 17 years for a trophy.
“We have built a foundation that means this club shouldn’t have to endure such a long wait for success again,” he stated.
“I believe strongly in this group of players and see great potential for their future growth.”
Although opinions among Tottenham fans were mixed regarding Postecoglou’s future, he had a message for them.
