The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has discredited a viral AI-generated video circulating on social media, describing it as entirely false and designed to deceive the public. The video features an artificially cloned voice of NNPC’s Group CEO, Mr. Bayo Ojulari, fraudulently promoting a fictitious poverty alleviation scheme allegedly sponsored by the company.

In an official statement released Thursday, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, categorically denied the company’s involvement in any such financial or investment initiative. He clarified that the claims made in the video are completely baseless and represent a dangerous attempt to exploit unsuspecting Nigerians, particularly those seeking financial aid.

The deceptive content, which originated from a Facebook account named Mensageiro de Cristo, has been flagged by NNPC as a deliberate act of fraud. Soneye emphasized the serious implications of such misinformation, warning that it has the potential to harm vulnerable individuals and damage public trust.

NNPC has called on the public to ignore the video and remain cautious of similar schemes that falsely claim endorsement by the company. Soneye also issued a stern warning to those behind the fabrication and dissemination of the video, stating that legal action will be pursued if the fraudulent activities persist.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical practices, NNPC urged Nigerians to verify any investment-related claims before taking action and to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information. The company also called on media users and platforms to help curb the spread of misinformation by reporting suspicious content and refraining from sharing unverified claims.

This incident highlights the growing threat of AI-driven disinformation and the urgent need for increased digital literacy and vigilance among the Nigerian public. As technology continues to evolve, so do the tactics of scammers, making it crucial for citizens to stay alert and informed.
