Container truck drivers at the Onne Port in Rivers State and other stakeholders, including the Association of Nigeria Licensed Custom Agents, (ANLCA) are excited over plans by the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) to open the completed access road for use by the ports community.
It was gathered that the move by the NPA followed persistent push by the management of Onne Multipurpose Terminal, a leading terminal operator at the port to ease difficulties regularly encountered on the earthen road.
One of the ANLCA members who spoke to our correspondent at Onne over the new development said, “first and very importantly, is our appreciation to the managing director of NPA for the construction and completion of a section of Road D.”
A source revealed that in February the Managing Director of OMT, Nicolo Scannavini had written to the NPA complaining about truck tripping on the earthen road and requesting urgent attention to address the challenge.
According to the source, OMT specifically requested for the opening of the completed Road D.

“We respectfully request permission to use the completed portion of Road D. This will enable NPA to ease traffic congestion, prevent accidents, and reduce the risk of trucks tripping over on the earthed road.
“We are confident that granting users permission to use the completed portion of the road will have a positive impact on the overall operations of the port and enhance the safety of all stakeholders,” Scannavini said.
Many drivers at the port were in a jubilant mood when our correspondent visited, describing plans by the NPA to open the completed section of Road D as a welcome development.
They also expressed appreciation to the NPA for heeding to their push to address road infrastructural needs at the port.
