The leaders of Yala Local Government Area in Cross River State and Izzi Local Government Area in Ebonyi State have declared a total cessation of bloodshed and conflict between their border communities.

The landmark peace agreement was reached during a high-level reconciliation meeting held at the Yala Council headquarters in Okpoma. Chairman of both councils, Dr. Fred Okem of Yala and Barrister Stephen Nwakpa of Izzi, jointly vowed that nothing would ever again justify violence or the shedding of blood between the two communities.

Flanked by youth leaders, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and security agencies, the two chairmen made a solemn pledge to uphold peace and foster unity among their people. They affirmed that all lingering issues fueling tensions along the border have been addressed and resolved amicably.

Dr. Okem, who hosted the meeting, described the peace pact as a significant step forward. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to sit with his Izzi counterpart, noting that the collaboration symbolizes a new era of mutual respect and understanding.

“I find it joyful and highly momentous to host the Chairman of Izzi Local Government Area in my office,” Okem stated. “This meeting has harmonized all differences between our sister communities and will serve as a solid foundation for peaceful coexistence. We as leaders must model the peace we seek. If we desire peace, our people will follow.”

In his remarks, Barrister Stephen Nwakpa acknowledged the pain of past conflicts, particularly the violent clashes in 2005 and 2018 that claimed lives and destroyed property. He emphasized that the communities must never allow such tragedies to repeat.

“Today, by divine providence, we have met to harmonize our differences. Over the next three years of our tenure, this peace we have initiated will grow stronger. There will be no more bloodshed between our people,” Nwakpa declared.

He also issued a strong appeal to the youth on both sides of the border, urging them to embrace peace and reject provocation. “Let it be known that nothing will ever again push Yala and Izzi to take up arms against each other.”

The declaration marks a new chapter for the two historically embattled communities, signaling a strong commitment to dialogue, collaboration, and lasting peace in the region.
