Starting July 1, 2025, the Delta State Transport Management Agency (DESTMA) will officially commence full enforcement of traffic regulations across the state, following months of strategic sensitization campaigns aimed at road users and public space stakeholders.
Speaking with journalists in Asaba, the Director General of DESTMA, Dr. Benjamin Essien Okiemute, emphasized that the agency is ready to implement stricter rules designed to bring order to the state’s roads and public environments. The announcement signals the beginning of a zero-tolerance era for traffic violations in Delta State.
Dr. Okiemute made it clear that motorcycle riders and their passengers must wear helmets at all times, while tricycles (popularly known as Keke) are now prohibited from using body extensions, curtain covers, or transporting heavy goods. These measures are designed to ensure both rider and passenger safety and to reduce road obstruction.
The DG further directed that all vehicle and tricycle operators currently occupying unauthorized parking spots must vacate them immediately or contact their respective local government authorities for designated and approved parking areas.

In a move to reclaim pedestrian access, market traders have been warned to stop displaying goods on sidewalks. Similarly, banks, churches, and other institutions with high human traffic have been ordered to provide adequate parking spaces for their customers and staff to avoid contributing to traffic congestion.
DESTMA will be enforcing these rules with the support of mobile courts, where violators will be tried on the spot. Those found guilty could face up to six months imprisonment with hard labor, depending on the severity of the offense. Additionally, any act of violence or assault on DESTMA officials during enforcement will attract heavy legal consequences from the Delta State Government.
Dr. Okiemute also revealed that DESTMA’s operations will be carried out in close collaboration with sister security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to guarantee effective enforcement and maintain law and order throughout the state.
