The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in partnership with HALO Trust Global is organising a capacity-building training focusing on enhancing personnel skills in safe weapons handling and building operational readiness to tackle explosive ordnance threats in the state.

This was disclosed by Richard Goss, HALO Trust Operations Manager, when he led a team on a courtesy visit to the NSCDC state Commandant, Maku Olatunde, at the state command headquarters in Awka.

Mr. Goss said HALO Trust Global has significantly contributed to global disarmament efforts by conducting assessments of weapons and explosive storage facilities, building and refurbishing storage facilities, managing weapon registrations, and enhancing the capacity of law enforcement agencies in the safe and secure storage and management of arms, ammunition, and explosive ordnance.

He highlighted the organisation’s expertise in humanitarian mine clearance, noting that the company assesses vulnerabilities and offers strategic recommendations to bolster security infrastructure and personnel capabilities, especially in areas impacted by explosive threats.

Responding, the NSCDC state Commandant Maku Olatunde, emphasized that regular training and re-training of personnel would significantly enhance the corps’ operational effectiveness.

He highlighted the need for stakeholder collaboration to prevent diversion, misuse and unauthorised handling of explosives and hazardous materials in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, by the NSCDC’s Head, Media and Tactical, Okadigbo Edwin, and made available to journalists.

The NSCDC Head of Chemical, Biological Radiology, and Nuclear Explosives Unit in the state, Onyebuchi Onwuteaka, stated that the training will provide personnel with essential expertise to handle ammunition and explosives safely, securely, and accountably.
