In a significant step towards gender equality, the airforce has welcomed its first group of former female cadets, now officially known as air women.
This was announced on the official X handle of the airforce on Monday, April 21, 2025.
This historic change comes as the airforce expands its recruitment policy, which was previously open only to male graduates from a military school, to also include young women from the airforce girls’ military school.
The first group to benefit from this new policy is the class of 2017 from the girls’ school, who recently completed their training and have joined the ranks of the airforce.
This marks a major milestone in promoting gender inclusion within the military.
This updated recruitment policy not only allows these new airwomen to serve in the airforce but also provides them with opportunities for education and career advancement through various training programs.
For many of them, this isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to build a future filled with pride and purpose.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, shared his excitement about this development, saying, “this is a proud moment for every girl who has dreamed of wearing the uniform. It shows our commitment to empowering young women and providing equal opportunities.”
These newly enlisted airwomen, trained in discipline and leadership at their school, are expected to make valuable contributions to the airforce and the country.
The air marshal highlighted that over the past 39 years, the girls’ military school has graduated more than 3,500 women who have gone on to excel in various fields, including the military, government, education, and business.
As these pioneering women begin their journey in the airforce, they represent not only their own achievements but also the message that gender should not limit one’s potential for excellence and service.
They are not just making history; they are creating a new narrative for the future.
