Renowned human rights lawyer and activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immortalize the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu and other key figures who played pivotal roles in shaping Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993, general election.
In a statement personally signed and issued on Friday, Adegboruwa highlighted Nwosu’s heroism, emphasizing his introduction of the Option A4 voting system, which revolutionized electoral transparency. He described Nwosu as a visionary who designed a process that eliminated electoral fraud and manipulation, ensuring that the will of the people prevailed at the polls.

According to Adegboruwa, the integrity and courage of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) under Nwosu’s leadership were instrumental in Chief MKO Abiola’s emergence as the rightful winner of the June 12 election. He argued that true democracy and good governance in Nigeria would only be achieved if the principles that defined June 12—credibility, transparency, and the protection of voters’ choices—are upheld by those in power.
“I believe Professor Nwosu and all those who were part of the June 12 struggle should be immortalized,” Adegboruwa stated. “Beyond mere proclamations, it is crucial that the ideals of June 12 are fully implemented to achieve real democracy, good governance, and national development.”
With the continued significance of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, Adegboruwa’s call adds to the growing demands for proper recognition of those who shaped one of the country’s most defining electoral moments.
