Senator Shehu Sani has thrown his support behind Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for banning the use of smartphones in secondary schools. The former Kaduna lawmaker praised the decision, describing it as a much-needed intervention to curb distractions and improve academic focus among students.

Sani highlighted the growing concerns among parents over their children’s addiction to smartphones, which he said has become the biggest disruption to academic life at the secondary school level. According to him, many parents now struggle daily to keep their children away from the excessive use of mobile phones, which often interferes with their studies.

Governor Soludo’s administration has taken a firm stance on the issue by directing secondary school principals and teachers in Anambra State to confiscate mobile phones brought to school by students. The policy aims to restore discipline in classrooms and enhance academic performance.

Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission in Anambra State, announced the directive during the Anambra Schools’ Cultural Day celebration in Awka. She stressed that the increasing use of mobile phones during school hours has become a serious distraction, preventing students from fully concentrating on their studies.

She further stated that the Soludo-led administration is making significant investments in education to promote academic excellence and instill discipline among students. By enforcing this ban, the government hopes to create a more focused learning environment where students can excel without the interference of social media and other online distractions.

Beyond the smartphone ban, Ikediugwu used the cultural event to advocate for the preservation of Igbo traditions. She urged schools to educate students on Igbo values and norms, emphasizing the beauty and uniqueness of their cultural heritage.

With Senator Sani’s endorsement, the debate over smartphone use in schools continues to gain national attention, sparking discussions on how best to balance technology and education in Nigeria.
