EHA-AMUFU, ENUGU—Tears flowed freely as the people of Amofia Umuhu, Eha-Amufu, laid to rest 29-year-old Donatus Ndubuisi, a student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), who was brutally murdered by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Ndubuisi, the only child of his widowed mother, met a tragic end on February 28, 2025, while assisting her on their farm. His murder marks a heartbreaking cycle of violence, as his father was also killed in a similar attack years ago.

Family sources revealed that Ndubuisi had traveled from Enugu, where he was studying and working as a solar energy technician, to check on his mother. Upon discovering that she had gone to the farm, he set out to join her, unknowingly walking into an ambush.

Gunmen believed to be Fulani herdsmen attacked them while they harvested cassava. As he attempted to flee, Ndubuisi was shot in the back and died instantly.

His gruesome killing has reignited fear and anger in Eha-Amufu, a community besieged by violent attacks since 2021.

Community leader Samuel Ede decried the tragedy, describing Ndubuisi as a young man full of promise, working tirelessly to support his education and his mother.

“This is beyond painful. He was striving for a better future, balancing school and work, only to be gunned down like his father. His mother has now lost everything,” Ede lamented.

In the wake of the killing, thousands of women from seven autonomous communities in Eha-Amufu stormed the streets in a mass protest last Thursday, demanding justice and government intervention. Holding placards, they condemned the gruesome murders and sexual violence against women, calling for urgent security measures.

The protest coincided with Ndubuisi’s burial over the weekend, where heartbroken mourners paid their last respects to a life cut short in its prime. However, the tragedy took a political twist when Isi-Uzo Local Government Chairman, Obiora Obeagu, dismissed the incident as a politically motivated scheme to tarnish Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. His comments, made via social media, further infuriated protesters, who accused him of ignoring the bloodshed while benefiting from their suffering.

The killing of Ndubuisi adds to the growing list of casualties in Eha-Amufu, a once-thriving agrarian community now overrun by violence. Residents are pleading with the government to take decisive action before more innocent lives are lost.
