Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing fundamental disagreements with the party’s current leadership.
El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, expressing disappointment over what he described as a deviation from democratic principles and progressive values.
In his resignation letter, El-Rufai noted his contributions to APC’s success in past elections and his efforts in governance. However, he stated that recent developments within the party had made it difficult for him to continue.
“I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform. However, developments in the last two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for democratic principles and progressive values that I hold dear,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor, who played a key role in APC’s victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, emphasized his dedication to policies aimed at human development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment during his tenure.
Declaring his next political steps, El-Rufai announced his membership in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), saying it aligns better with his political ideology.
“At this point in my political journey, I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish,” he said.
El-Rufai pledged his commitment to building a unified democratic alternative through the SDP and called on Nigerians concerned about the country’s future to join the movement.
“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to fostering a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections.”
Concluding his announcement, El-Rufai urged like-minded Nigerians to support the SDP’s vision, stressing the need for a stronger democratic system in Nigeria.
