Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha has been charged by the Football Association following his dramatic red card during Wolves’ FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Bournemouth. The FA alleges that Cunha “acted in an improper manner” after being sent off in the final minute of extra time for a heated altercation with Cherries defender Milos Kerkez.

The fiery incident erupted when Cunha clashed with Kerkez in the dying moments of extra time. The Wolves forward appeared to lose his temper, lashing out at the Hungarian defender three times. He first engaged in a physical tussle, then kicked out at Kerkez before attempting a headbutt as the Bournemouth player got back on his feet. The heated exchange left match officials with no choice but to take decisive action. Referee Sam Barrott eventually issued a straight red card, but Cunha, still fuming, had to be physically restrained and escorted down the tunnel as tensions threatened to boil over.

The 25-year-old Brazilian, who had earlier kept Wolves in the game by scoring a crucial equalizer at the Vitality Stadium, now finds himself in hot water with the FA. He has been given until Monday to respond to the charge, which could result in further disciplinary action, including a possible suspension.

Saturday’s gripping FA Cup clash ended 1-1 after extra time, but it was Bournemouth who held their nerve in the penalty shootout, securing a 5-4 victory to advance to the quarter-finals. While the Cherries celebrate their hard-fought progression, Wolves must now deal with the aftermath of Cunha’s controversial dismissal, which has quickly become a major talking point in English football.
