The federal government on Tuesday, commissioned the first-ever barracks for staff of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, marking a historic milestone 35 years after the agency’s establishment.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the facility as a critical investment in the welfare of NDLEA personnel, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to their security and effectiveness in combating drug-related crimes.

“The fight against drug abuse is a fight for our nation’s future. This barracks is more than a place of residence; it is a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope for a safer society,” Fagbemi said.

He emphasized that the facility aligns with the renewed hope agenda of president Bola Tinubu, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security institutions.

The minister urged NDLEA officers to view the investment as a call to higher responsibility and unwavering dedication to duty.

The barracks, situated on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, features modern administrative offices, detention facilities, secure storage, and residential accommodations.

It includes a state-of-the-art administrative building, a detention center, an exhibit room, watchtowers, and operational pavilions.

The residential section comprises lodges for state and zonal commanders, 80 one-bedroom terrace flats, 120 two-bedroom semi-detached flats, and 60 three-bedroom semi-detached flats.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), highlighted the importance of the project, noting that many NDLEA officers had been vulnerable due to a lack of secure housing.
“Tragically, some of our personnel have been attacked and murdered in their homes. This facility will significantly improve their safety and working conditions,” he said.

Marwa expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and to former President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating the project.

He also commended Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu for their contributions to the project’s success.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri lauded the barracks as a significant step in protecting Nigerians, particularly the youth, from the dangers of illicit drugs.

“This is not just about infrastructure; it is about reinforcing our collective resolve to safeguard our society from the menace of drug abuse,” he stated.

National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, represented by AIG Rex Dundun, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for security agencies.

“This facility is a testament to the government’s appreciation of NDLEA’s hard work and commitment to Nigeria’s security,” he said.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, and House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Narcotic Drugs, Rep. Abass Adigun, also pledged continued legislative support to enhance NDLEA’s operations.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, members of the National Assembly from Adamawa State, and first-class traditional rulers.
