Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Chevron Nigeria Limited to provide more employment opportunities for Deltans and strengthen its corporate social responsibility initiatives in host communities.
The governor made the appeal on Tuesday, during a courtesy visit by Chevron’s management team, led by its Chairman/Managing Director, Mr. Jim Swartz, at Government House, Asaba.
Speaking during the meeting, Gov. Oborevwori commended Chevron for its long-standing presence in Delta State and its contributions to the state’s economy, but stressed the need for greater inclusion of Deltans in leadership roles within the company.
“Our people need tangible benefits, and we must ensure that what is being done for them is impactful. Companies must provide job opportunities for our youths. If there are openings, let the youth leadership know so that qualified Deltans can take advantage of them,” the governor stated.
He expressed concerns about the low representation of Deltans in senior positions within oil companies, emphasizing that the current situation must change.
“How many of our people are currently in top management positions? Only a few. We need to see more of our own in leadership roles, not just as casual workers. Employment should not be taken lightly or treated as temporary arrangements,” Gov. Oborevwori said.
The governor also addressed the delicate relationship between oil companies and host communities, warning against disruptions to company operations, while insisting that oil corporations must fulfill their obligations to local residents.
“I will not tolerate any attempt to disrupt company operations, but I will also not allow companies to exploit or oppress our people. There must be fairness on both sides,” he declared.
The governor reassured investors that Delta State remains safe for business, and committed to providing a stable environment for economic activities.
Gov. Oborevwori further assured Chevron of his administration’s commitment to fostering peace and cooperation between the company and host communities.
He encouraged Chevron to expand its investments in Delta State and ensure that more locals benefit from employment opportunities and leadership positions.

“Delta State is open for business, and we are ready to support companies that invest in our people and communities,” he said.
Earlier, Mr. Jim Swartz reaffirmed Chevron’s dedication to Delta State, highlighting the company’s efforts to drive development through social investment projects, job creation, and local content policies.
“Chevron has operated in Nigeria for over six decades, and Delta State has always been a key part of our operations. Our commitment to the state goes beyond revenue generation—we prioritize community engagement, social investment, and local capacity development,” Swartz stated.
He pointed out several projects Chevron has implemented in the state, including educational support and healthcare initiatives, such as the establishment of a chest clinic at the tuberculosis and leprosy center and an ongoing mother and child center project.
Swartz also acknowledged the importance of security in sustaining oil production and called for continuous collaboration to address challenges such as oil theft and vandalization.
“A safe and secure operating environment is critical not only for Delta State, but also for Nigeria’s economic growth. We appreciate the support of the government in ensuring stability, and we remain committed to working together to sustain this productive partnership,” he said.
