Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has unveiled a free transport program aimed at easing the holiday travel burden for 710 non-indigenes residing in the state. The initiative, which began on Saturday, is designed to help beneficiaries return home for the Christmas and New Year celebrations without financial strain.
Under the scheme, travelers are being transported to various regions across Nigeria, including the North Central, South East, South West, and South South zones. Over three days, groups of travelers will depart from the Borno Express Bus Terminus, with the first batch of 285 travelers already en route.
Governor Zulum introduced this free transport program in 2020 as part of his administration’s strategy to support the less privileged, especially in the face of economic challenges like the removal of fuel subsidies. Each traveler in the current program also received N50,000 in cash to assist with their journey, further demonstrating the governor’s commitment to alleviating financial hardships.
Beyond the transport initiative, Governor Zulum extended his generosity to 250 widows who were not traveling, providing each with N50,000 to celebrate the Christmas season. Speaking at the launch ceremony, the governor reaffirmed his dedication to inclusive governance and addressing the needs of all residents, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Chief Ugochukwu Egwidike, Chairman of the Ohaneze All Progressives Congress (APC) support group, praised the governor’s efforts, highlighting other welfare programs such as subsidized transportation within Maiduguri and sponsorship of Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem. He noted that the governor’s free transport scheme, now in its fourth year, has bridged mobility gaps and fostered economic growth across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Alhaji Hassan Alao Yusuf, the Oba of Yorubas in Borno, also commended Governor Zulum, describing him as a leader who prioritizes unity and inclusivity. He emphasized that the transport scheme has brought immense relief to many residents, particularly those who might otherwise struggle to afford travel costs.
Grema Zanna, General Manager of the Borno Express Transport Corporation, lauded the governor’s vision, noting that non-indigenes play a significant role in the state’s economy. Zanna stressed that the initiative not only reduces transportation costs but also reflects the governor’s recognition of the contributions of all residents toward the development of Borno State.
