The Federal Government has once again reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to peaceful boundary resolutions and regional integration through the National Boundary Commission (NBC). This commitment, emphasized during a review of the Commission’s 2024 achievements, highlights innovative strategies aimed at transforming contentious borders into opportunities for growth and cooperation.
The Director-General of NBC, Surveyor Adamu Adaji, represented by Dr. Emmanuel Bulus, Director of Interstate Boundaries, underscored the Commission’s pivotal role in fostering harmony. He spotlighted landmark initiatives like the “Anambra/Enugu Homegrown Formula,” which has become a model for resolving interstate disputes. Another success story is the Benue/Nasarawa boundary pillar emplacement project, a testament to NBC’s resolve in addressing long-standing boundary issues.
Technological advancements have been central to NBC’s 2024 achievements. The digitization of the Commission’s library has significantly improved access to critical boundary data, while advanced training programs have equipped staff with state-of-the-art tools in conflict resolution and maritime law. Notable progress has also been made in clarifying complex boundaries, such as those between Kebbi/Niger and Gombe/Taraba States.
On the maritime front, the NBC has positioned Nigeria as a key player in unlocking the potential of maritime resources. Renewed negotiations on the Nigeria-Ghana boundary and advocacy for deep seabed mining underscore the country’s leadership in this sector.

Internationally, the Commission has achieved remarkable milestones, including the installation of 254 boundary pillars along the Nigeria-Cameroon border in Borno State and advancements in the Nigeria-Benin boundary project. Community-focused initiatives, such as providing solar-powered boreholes in border towns, have further reinforced the NBC’s dual commitment to peace and development.
Despite resource constraints, insecurity, and stakeholder resistance, Adaji unveiled a bold 10-point agenda for 2025. This includes nationwide sensitization campaigns, deeper technological integration, and climate-resilient boundary management strategies. The NBC also plans to expedite dispute resolution through grassroots collaborations, enhance regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), and promote inclusive decision-making by engaging marginalized groups.
Calling on Nigerians to reimagine boundaries as symbols of unity and growth, Adaji declared, “Together, we can transform borders into opportunities for development.”
This renewed focus by the NBC not only highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to regional peace but also positions Nigeria as a leader in innovative boundary management across Africa.
