The Adamawa State Government has inaugurated a Local Government Boundary Committee, charging its members to safeguard the state’s territorial integrity and ensure no portion of Nigeria’s land is lost under the current administration.

Presiding over the ceremony at the Government House Banquet Hall in Yola, the state capital, the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, emphasized the importance of teamwork and dedication to resolving boundary disputes, particularly given Adamawa State’s extensive border with the Republic of Cameroon, which spans nine local government areas.

“Our land is our heritage, passed down from our forebears. If we cannot add to it, we must not allow it to shrink. Future generations will depend on this land when we are no more,” she stated.

Acknowledging the complexity of boundary issues, Professor Farauta stressed the need for peaceful resolutions and cooperation among border communities.

She urged the committee members to perform their duties with seriousness, ensuring the state’s territorial integrity is preserved.

“Your inauguration is a call to serve the state. Be serious and committed in addressing boundary disputes to maintain peace, security, and socio-economic activities along our borders,” she added.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s zero-tolerance policy toward threats to the state’s borders and advocated for proper documentation of boundary issues to ensure continuity and effective management.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the State Boundary Commission, Mercy Dauda, described the event as a milestone in promoting harmony and development among border communities.

“Boundaries are not just lines on a map; they are frameworks for governance and service delivery. Critical boundary issues must be carefully and peacefully managed to unite, not divide, our people,” Dauda said.

She called on the committee members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, professionalism, and a focus on fostering peace.

The inauguration, according to her, underscores the state government’s commitment to protecting Adamawa’s borders while promoting peaceful coexistence and socio-economic development along its boundaries.
