Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has announced his detachment from partisan politics, declaring himself “a non-party statesman” focused on serving humanity. This statement came during his speech at the 80th birthday celebration of former Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Chairman, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, in Abuja.

Obasanjo emphasized that he has distanced himself from party affiliations, explaining that he has not held a party membership card for years. Instead, he now dedicates himself to a statesman’s role, addressing Nigeria’s broader interests beyond partisan boundaries.

In his speech, Obasanjo praised Ugochukwu for his unwavering loyalty during the 1999 presidential campaign, particularly noting his support amidst competing ethnic allegiances. Reflecting on Ugochukwu’s loyalty, Obasanjo recalled, “You were 100% loyal, even when some saw you as a ‘spy’ or a ‘bastard’ for supporting me instead of an Igbo candidate.”

Obasanjo expressed deep gratitude for Ugochukwu’s commitment, both during his tenure as president and beyond, emphasizing how Ugochukwu’s steadfast loyalty has remained intact through the years.

Looking ahead, Obasanjo urged Ugochukwu to remain a force for good, even in challenging times. He cited 1 Corinthians 13, encouraging Ugochukwu to hold onto faith, hope, and love, regardless of Nigeria’s current difficulties. “Your faith must not diminish. Even when things look bleak, we must stay hopeful,” he urged.

The former president added, “Live a life of love—for family, friends, foes, community, state, and country. Above all, love for humanity and God.”

Obasanjo’s recent statements highlight a shift in his focus from political roles to serving as a national and global statesman, promoting unity and guiding the nation’s younger leaders. His decision to abandon party affiliations emphasizes his commitment to Nigeria’s future over political rivalry, appealing to a wider audience across all political spectrums.

This move aligns with Obasanjo’s calls for Nigerians to prioritize national unity and social cohesion over partisan interests, as the country navigates pressing socio-political and economic challenges.
