The Israeli government has raised alarms about Iran’s alleged involvement in destabilizing West Africa, particularly Nigeria, as security concerns deepen across the region.
Michael Freeman, Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, made these remarks in Abuja during an event commemorating one year since the tragic October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, where hundreds of Israelis were brutally killed. Freeman highlighted the ongoing security issues in Nigeria, claiming Iran’s influence extends beyond the Middle East to Africa, aiming to disrupt peace in Nigeria, the continent’s most populous nation.
Freeman’s statements come amid rising hopes within Israeli government circles following Donald Trump’s recent victory in the U.S. presidential election. Known for his strong pro-Israel stance during his previous term from 2017 to 2021, Trump’s return to office has sparked optimism among Israeli diplomats, including Freeman, who anticipate renewed American support for Israel’s security efforts.

Reflecting on the October 7 massacre, Freeman shared Israel’s sorrow over the tragic loss and the more than 101 innocent hostages – children, women, and elderly – still held by Hamas. He expressed gratitude to allies, especially the United States, for their unwavering support, emphasizing Israel’s determination to secure the release of the hostages and restore control over the Gaza Strip.
The Ambassador’s message has once again raised Israel’s concern over Iran’s alleged activities in Africa as they call for global solidarity in the face of ongoing regional challenges.
