Apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to retain Engr. David Umahi as the Minister of Works. The organization praised the move, describing it as a positive step toward addressing long-standing infrastructure neglect in Southeastern Nigeria and a “consolation gift” to the Ndigbo people worldwide.
In a statement released by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary-General of the Chidi Ibeh-led faction of Ohanaeze, the organization highlighted the systemic infrastructure challenges the Southeast has faced for over five decades, following the aftermath of the Biafra War.
Ohanaeze emphasized that the Southeast has endured what it called “silent but insidious” neglect by successive governments, resulting in limited federal investment in the region’s infrastructure. “This neglect has acted as a form of capital punishment, causing a lack of essential amenities and fueling discontent among Southeastern communities,” the statement read.
The group pointed out that this historical oversight has not only excluded the Southeast from vital national development efforts but has also deepened feelings of marginalization, fostering restiveness among the youth and residents eager for change.
Ohanaeze views Umahi’s appointment as Minister of Works as a significant acknowledgment of the region’s struggles. “President Tinubu’s appointment of Senator Dave Umahi is a powerful symbol of hope, ensuring the Southeast’s voice is heard in Nigeria’s corridors of power,” said Isiguzoro. Known for his excellence as an engineer, Umahi is seen as the right person to drive quality infrastructure projects that could bring a much-needed transformation to the Southeast.

Ohanaeze expressed optimism that under Umahi’s leadership, the Ministry of Works will prioritize high-quality, durable construction projects for Southeastern roads and facilities. “Senator Umahi’s experience and commitment to excellence will be instrumental in ensuring Southeast roads and infrastructure are built to world-class standards,” the statement added.
The organization sees Umahi’s retention as a turning point, believing it will deepen Southeastern support for President Tinubu’s administration. “This is a watershed moment for our region and a sign that positive change is possible,” Ohanaeze remarked. They expressed full confidence in Umahi’s leadership and pledged unwavering support for his mission to enhance infrastructure across Nigeria.
Calling on all Igbo people, both in Nigeria and the diaspora, Ohanaeze urged collective support for President Tinubu’s administration, encouraging unity in the pursuit of progress and equity. “Let us rally behind this initiative to ensure that our voices resonate in Nigeria’s journey toward balanced development,” the group stated.
Ohanaeze believes this decision will be a catalyst for transformative infrastructure growth in the Southeast, strengthening ties with the federal government and laying a strong foundation for future development.
