Professor Oguejiofo Ujam, a senior lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has regained his freedom after a daring escape from kidnappers. Ujam, who was abducted along the notorious Ugwuogo-Opi Nsukka Road, managed to break free at the Ninth Mile area of Enugu State.
In a separate incident on Monday, just 24 hours after Ujam’s abduction, the Enugu State Police Command successfully foiled another attempted kidnapping on the same stretch of road.
Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the developments in a statement on Tuesday. “Police operatives attached to the Unity Division thwarted a suspected kidnapping attempt on October 28, 2024, around 7:10 p.m., at the Neke-Uno axis of the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road,” he stated.

After an intense gunfight, the suspects fled, leaving behind an AK-47 rifle, two loaded magazines, and thirty-nine rounds of live ammunition. DSP Ndukwe also revealed that the ensuing police operation enabled Professor Ujam to escape his captors later that night.
Assuring the public of increased security measures, Ndukwe announced that Enugu’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered the deployment of additional personnel and resources to strengthen surveillance and patrols along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road.
The police also dismissed recent viral claims about the kidnapping of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer traveling from Benue State along the same route, clarifying that no such incident had occurred.
