The Taraba State House of Assembly has garnered widespread praise for its swift progress on a landmark bill aimed at establishing a Commission for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state. The most recent commendation came from the Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC), a coalition of five civil society organizations (CSOs), which lauded the Assembly’s inclusive approach following the bill’s successful second reading.
The proposed bill seeks to establish the Taraba State Persons with Disabilities Commission, a critical step toward safeguarding the rights of PWDs and ensuring their access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and social welfare.
Grace Jerry, Executive Director of ADAC and the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), praised the leadership of the House, particularly Speaker John Bonzina and the Committee on Social Welfare, for facilitating the bill’s progress and scheduling a public hearing on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Jerry noted the Assembly’s commitment to inclusivity, stating: “The second reading and the scheduling of the public hearing reflect the Assembly’s dedication to empowering PWDs, aligning with the vision of Governor Agbu Kefas, who has consistently championed the rights of PWDs since taking office.”

The bill, once passed, is expected to be swiftly signed into law by Governor Kefas, providing a solid framework for protecting and promoting the rights of PWDs in Taraba. ADAC expressed optimism that the law will bring about significant changes in fostering an inclusive and supportive society for the PWD community.
In addition to ADAC’s praise, the state chapter of the Joint Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) expressed their excitement over the bill’s advancement. JONAPWD emphasized that the establishment of the Commission would give PWDs a much-needed sense of belonging and empowerment throughout the state.
The group also called for the active involvement of PWDs in managing the Commission, should it be established, to ensure its effectiveness in addressing their unique needs.
