A committee assigned with the responsibility of reviewing the ban on metal scavenging in Borno state, have been constituted by the state Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.
The ban, which was imposed in July 2023, was aimed at protecting scavengers from the threat of Boko Haram insurgents.
The new committee, which was announced on weekend by the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi, includes representatives from various security agencies, government ministries, and the Borno State Metal Scavengers Association.

The committee, as noticed by The Trumpet, will be chaired by Alhaji Nasiru Ali Surundi, with members from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, NSCDC, DSS, Ministry of Justice, and other relevant government bodies.
The primary goal of the committee is to establish a framework to regulate and sanitize the scavenging business, while recognizing the important role it plays in providing livelihoods for many young people in the state.
“Governor Zulum’s administration seeks to balance safety concerns with economic needs, particularly for the youth involved in metal scavenging activities.” The statement read.
