A leading Construction giant and contractor Julius Berger, has on Sunday, officially handed over the multi-billion naira second Niger Bridge project to the Federal Government.
In a brief ceremony at the toll area of the bridge, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, expressed satisfaction with the project, confirming that the contractor had carried out repairs on the vandalized portions
He also noted that the bridge is open to concession to any private company that would be ready to complete all the ancillary roads, collect tolls and recoup investments.
Umahi hinted that modalities to ease traffic at the old and new bridges during the festive period are being worked out.
The1.6 kilometers long bridge links Anambra and Delta states.
Speaking, the Managing Director of Julius Berger, Dr Lars Richter, said the event was a technical handover after the project was inaugurated by the former administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He stated that work was successfully completed in time and Julius Berger had delivered the highest quality of work.
The Director, Bridge Design and Construction ( South), Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Bede Obioha, tasked residents around the second Niger Bridge to assist secure the already installed facilities.
He commended the staff of the ministry for a job well done while urging road users and residents to abide by the rules of the road.
The Second Niger Bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu and President Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
