The leadership of the Taraba state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have continued to receive condemnation over its alleged endorsement of a particular governorship candidate in the state.

The latest condemnation, as noticed by The Trumpet came on Thursday from the guber candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Emmanuel Bwacha, Social Democratic Party, (SDP) Danladi Baido and Labour Party (LP), Senator Joel Danlami Ikenya.

Expressing their dismay over CAN’s position, the candidates in a press briefing in Jalingo, collectively resolved that “CAN in Taraba state is a government parental” adding that the association has been “politicised and has taken side with the PDP.”

Stressing that Taraba state “is not a company that you can come and impose a candidate on the people” the candidates who affirmed that “We are not candidates of a particular religion” urged the electorate to disregard the association by coming out en-mass during the governorship election to elect a candidate of their choice whom they believe will “salvage the state from the shackles of slavery and poverty.”

The candidates who seek to know why CAN “has gone out of its schedules in Taraba” urged the association to as a matter of urgency desists from using religion to deceive the people of the state.

They believe that the actions of CAN are capable of causing divisions among members of the Christian community and the association, as they ought to encourage their congregations to throw their weights behind a credible candidate at the polls than compelling them to vote for a particular candidate.

For the past eight years, the incumbent governor has “not been able to Commission a single project in this state” adding that, “pensioners are dying.”

For this sole reason, they said “We want a homegrown politician to take over Taraba. We are not going to be remotely controlled by anybody. We won’t vote along religious lines. We are determined to rescue the rescuer.”

Going further to express disappointment at CAN’s position, the need for the electorate and the people of the state to handle the association comments with kid gloves, they believed has become necessary, adding that “nobody will come and play pranks with the name of religion in Taraba state.”

Several other individuals, organisations, as well as some churches have also frowned at the purported endorsement that was carried out by the association.

At the time of filing this report, the Christian community in Taraba state, seem to have been divided by the leadership of the association.

CAN in Taraba, through the state chairman, Isaiah Magaji Jeripe, as observed by The Trumpet, recently endorsed the governorship flag bearer of the PDP, Kefas Agbu, for the forthcoming governorship election slated for next week Saturday.
