The Ondo state Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has met with the management of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) over the alleged extortion and harassment by presumed thugs and cultists at the second entrance of the institution.
Speaking at the meeting, NANS chairman, Comrade Omotoso Surprise commended the Vice Chancellor and his entire management for swinging into action and giving room to liaise and negotiate for solutions, urging the management to organize a security summit to orientate students on how to be security cautious and also gather security information that can help the security units.
He beseeched the management to liaise with the State’s Amotekun Corps in order to have a permanent base at South Gate. He also asked the management to immediately apprehend the miscreants, adding that the hoodlums are known and their hideouts are popular.
In the same vein, the Federal University of Technology, Akure Student Association (FUTASU) President, Comrade Ibiyemi Abiodun declared that until their demands are met, the peaceful protest will continue. He said, “The peaceful demonstrations will continue and I will need to call a CONGRESS to relay the outcome of the meeting to the entire students and if at all they see their demands are being met, they will call off the protests.”
Responding to the students body, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adeola Fuwape assured the student of his swift response to all demands and directed the Director of works of the university to light up the affected areas.
He also authorized the Dean of Students’ Affairs to put a call through to the Toll Free line officers so they can rectify the University’s Toll-Free lines.
“I promised to meet with the Commander of Amotekun Corps to create a post around the South Gate axis and also promised to provide needed facilities for the corps,” said the VC.
He further pleaded with the students’ union executives to call off the peaceful protests so that Academic activities can resume and put an end to further alterations on the academic calendar.
Recall that THE TRUMPET reported that the students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State had on Monday trooped out in their numbers to protest against the alleged trickery and harassment by presumed thugs and cultists at the second entrance of the institution.
