Killings in Sapele town has turned to a daily routine as two persons were gunned down at the weekend again at Ugbeyiyi and Mission road. Consequently, Sapele Divisional Police Officer, Harrison Nwabuisi called off the town hall meeting that was slated for June 4, 2022 at Okpe Community Hall.

Within two weeks, the number of assassinations by unknown gunmen has risen to about eight and yet no one could really say the reason for the killings.

One Samson, who was shot, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital, but died the next day.

Another one that took place at Mission road involved s a member of the local vigilance group called Israel.

The victim did not die on the spot. He was rescued and taken for treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

The shootings are usually carried out between 5.00pm and 8.00pm.

Sapele residents are calling on the Police force and all relevant security agencies in the town to step up their game and put an end to this menace that is almost getting out of hand.

Residents close their business earlier than normal because of the security situation.

A resident, Mr Christopher Anthony, ascribed the killings to youth restiveness and unemployment. He, therefore, called for major all stakeholders In Sapele to be concerned and do something.

Speaking to newsmen at his residence., he said that “urban population has grown, but urban jobs are not available to meet the increase in the population and I believe that fighting unemployment is the key to ending insecurity in the town.

” Several factors account for Insecurity, but when you have growing unemployment in the society, where people are neither able to fend for themselves and neither do they have a source of likelihood, there is always the tendency that they will go into crime and that is why the crime rate has become very high.

“Everybody’s must try to work hard to pull people out of unemployment and poverty. We must ensure that we begin to design policies and programme that would continually engage our youths.”

He said there was need for sensitization and awareness creation among youths.

” I am appealing to all youths in Sapele to give peace a chance, and drop arms,” he added.
