A social media debate on Facebook over the value of academic qualifications has generated widespread reactions among Nigerians, with many declaring their readiness to surrender or destroy all their school certificates in exchange for $800 million.

Key Highlights

  • A Facebook post asked Nigerians if they would burn all their school certificates for $800 million.
  • Many respondents enthusiastically accepted, some offering to add houses and even school buildings.
  • Some said their certificates had never earned them “a single kobo.”
  • Others linked the reactions to economic hardship and unemployment.
  • The debate has reopened questions about the value of education in Nigeria’s labour market.

The debate began after a Facebook user, Paul Joseph, posed the question: “Can you burn all your school certificates for 800 million dollars?”

The seemingly simple question quickly attracted comments from Nigerians, many of whom enthusiastically accepted the offer, while others used the opportunity to express frustration over the country’s economic realities and the limited financial rewards many graduates receive despite years of academic investment.

Some respondents went beyond offering their certificates, joking that they would include their school buildings, houses and even other personal belongings in the exchange.

How Nigerians Reacted

One respondent, Mandyen Gideon, declared that he was willing to burn every document, including those relating to the schools he attended. “I go burn everything document, including the schools sef,” he wrote.

Similarly, B Castle Fabrics argued that academic certificates had not translated into financial benefits for many Nigerians, making the hypothetical $800 million offer particularly attractive.

“We’ve been keeping the certificate for a very long time without a single kobo entering our account. It’s better to burn it and have some genuine cash. My opinion,” the respondent stated.

Another participant, Precious Yakubu, jokingly indicated a willingness to include a house in the deal, while Dorah Chiwar went as far as suggesting that she would burn the Ministry of Education.

Atiku Usman Ningi also indicated that he would accept even $10 million, significantly below the $800 million proposed in the original question.

Other respondents expressed their willingness to participate without hesitation, with comments such as “sharp sharp” and “ahhh, in one second” reflecting the enthusiasm with which some Nigerians approached the hypothetical offer.

The conversation also attracted humorous exchanges among participants, with some inviting their spouses and family members to join the imagined deal.

Serah Joshua Dlama, for instance, called for her husband’s certificates to be included, while Joan Jonathan extended the invitation to her biological mother’s.

However, not everyone appeared comfortable with the question. Some participants questioned its timing and underlying message, particularly against the backdrop of the country’s economic challenges.

One respondent, Lois Nini, linked the debate to the hardship Nigerians are experiencing, suggesting that the prevailing economic situation had made people willing to exchange almost anything for financial security.

Education Versus Financial Security

The reactions reflect broader frustrations among Nigerians over the relationship between education, employment and financial stability.

For many graduates, obtaining a tertiary qualification requires years of academic commitment, financial sacrifices and personal dedication.

However, securing employment that offers reasonable wages and opportunities for career advancement remains a challenge for many.

Nigeria’s persistent unemployment and underemployment concerns, rising living costs and insecurity have also intensified conversations about the ability of education to guarantee economic independence.

Although academic certificates remain important for professional opportunities, career progression and access to specialised occupations, the responses to Joseph’s question suggest that some Nigerians are increasingly measuring success by financial security rather than educational achievements alone.

The debate also raises questions about whether the country’s education system is adequately preparing graduates for the labour market and whether the economy is creating sufficient opportunities for people to benefit from their qualifications.

While the $800 million offer was hypothetical and no actual exchange was involved, the overwhelming willingness expressed by several participants turned the Facebook post into a broader conversation about the meaning of education, wealth and success in contemporary Nigeria.

Ultimately, the discussion has highlighted a striking dilemma: Nigerians may continue to value education, but for many, the promise of financial freedom appears increasingly difficult to ignore when placed against the realities of unemployment and economic hardship.
