Carragher admitted that his choice of words was inappropriate, describing his comments as “clumsy and wrong” after Villa threatened legal action over what the club called unacceptable insults.
In a statement published on social media on Saturday, the Sky Sports and CBS pundit expressed regret over the controversy, insisting that his remarks were intended as a joke rather than an attempt to disrespect the club.
“I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans,” Carragher wrote. “My language this week was clumsy and wrong.
“I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies.”
How The Row Started
The controversy followed comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast, where he discussed the possibility of Emery becoming Manchester United’s next manager amid uncertainty surrounding Michael Carrick’s position.
During the discussion, Carragher suggested that Emery might welcome the opportunity to manage a club he described as a giant, arguing that football operates within a hierarchy in which bigger clubs can attract players and managers from smaller ones.
However, his remarks that Villa would never be Manchester United, alongside his instruction for Villa supporters to “shut up”, provoked strong reactions from the club’s fan base.
Aston Villa responded on Friday by announcing plans to initiate legal action against Carragher.
The club’s statement, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, condemned the former England international’s remarks as unacceptable insults.

Following the backlash, Carragher initially defended his comments, describing his instruction to Villa supporters as a joke and maintaining that he had praised Emery and the club on several occasions.
He also revisited the issue on the Overlap Daily podcast, reiterating that his remarks were made in jest while describing Emery as one of the outstanding managers in the Premier League.
Carragher’s comments came as Manchester United continue to face uncertainty over their managerial situation following a difficult start to the season under Carrick.
The former Liverpool defender’s apology has now addressed the public criticism from Villa supporters, although the club’s earlier threat of legal action has placed the dispute in the spotlight.
