The Premier League club announced its decision in a statement published on social media and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, accusing the former England international of making disparaging remarks about Villa and their fans.
Villa also vowed to protect their growing status in English and European football, insisting they would not allow anyone to undermine their progress.
What Carragher Said
The dispute followed comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast earlier in the week, where he suggested that Aston Villa manager Unai Emery could be tempted by an opportunity to take charge of Manchester United.
Carragher’s remarks came amid uncertainty surrounding Manchester United manager Michael Carrick’s position following the club’s disappointing start to the season.
Discussing Emery’s managerial prospects, Carragher argued that Manchester United remained a bigger club and suggested the Spaniard might welcome the opportunity to manage a football giant again.
He also pointed to what he described as the hierarchy of football, arguing that elite clubs regularly attract players and managers from teams below them.
Using Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Real Madrid as an example, Carragher said clubs below Aston Villa could similarly attract their players or manager.
He then directed a blunt message at Villa supporters, telling them to “shut up” and insisting that Aston Villa would never be Manchester United.
The comments triggered a backlash among Villa fans, who criticised the pundit for what they considered disrespectful remarks about their club.
Carragher Defends Himself
Carragher subsequently defended himself on social media, explaining that his response to Villa supporters was intended as a joke following criticism he had received for suggesting Emery might consider joining Manchester United.
The former Liverpool defender maintained that he had praised Emery and Aston Villa for years.

Speaking further on The Overlap Daily, Carragher described Emery as the best manager in the Premier League and said Manchester United would naturally consider the strongest candidates available if they were looking to appoint a new manager.
He clarified that he was not predicting Emery would leave Aston Villa but argued that Manchester United would be justified in exploring the possibility of appointing him.
Carragher added that a manager told he had reached his professional ceiling might feel compelled to prove otherwise, explaining that this was the point he had intended to make.
He maintained that his remarks to Villa supporters were made in jest, despite the controversy they generated.
Aston Villa’s threat of legal action now raises the prospect of a legal dispute between the club and the 48-year-old pundit, who works for Sky Sports and American broadcaster CBS Sports.
