Nigerians with compatible Android smartphones can now make contactless payments following the official launch of Google Wallet and Google Pay in the country on October 28, 2026. The service allows eligible users to add supported bank cards to their digital wallets and pay at contactless terminals, as well as make payments online and through supported apps.

Google announced the launch on its Africa blog, extending its digital payment services to Nigerian Android and Wear OS users.

Key Highlights

  • Google Wallet and Google Pay officially launched in Nigeria on October 28, 2026.
  • Customers with eligible cards from FirstBank, GTBank, Zenith Bank and UBA can access the service.
  • Supported Android phones can make contactless payments at compatible point-of-sale terminals.
  • Google Wallet also supports digital storage of loyalty cards, event tickets and boarding passes.
  • Verve, AfriGO and cards from several fintech companies are not supported at launch.
  • Wider adoption of contactless payments will depend partly on the availability of NFC-enabled payment terminals.

Four Nigerian Banks Support Google Wallet at Launch

At launch, Google Wallet supports selected Mastercard and Visa cards issued by four Nigerian banks.

The supported cards include:

BankSupported Cards
FirstBankMastercard debit cards
GTBankMastercard debit and prepaid cards
Zenith BankMastercard credit, debit and prepaid cards
UBAMastercard credit, debit and prepaid cards, plus selected Visa prepaid cards

According to information published about the rollout, UBA has positioned itself as the first Nigerian bank to enable the service for eligible Visa and Mastercard users.

Mastercard also worked with Interswitch to support tokenisation, a security process that replaces a customer’s actual card number with a unique digital credential during transactions.

However, support is not yet available for all Nigerian bank cards. Verve and AfriGO cards, alongside cards issued by several fintech companies, including OPay, Moniepoint, Kuda and PalmPay, are not listed among the supported options at launch.

Customers are advised to check with their banks or through the Google Wallet app to confirm whether their cards are eligible. More financial institutions may join the service as the rollout expands.

How to Set Up Google Wallet in Nigeria

Eligible customers need a compatible Android smartphone or Wear OS device, the Google Wallet application and a supported bank card to use the service.

The setup process involves downloading Google Wallet from the Google Play Store, adding an eligible payment card and completing the verification process required by the issuing bank.

For in-store payments, users must ensure that their phones support Near Field Communication (NFC) and that the feature is enabled.

Once set up, customers can unlock their phones and hold them close to an NFC-enabled payment terminal to complete a contactless transaction.

Google Wallet also allows users to store other digital items, including loyalty cards, event tickets and airline boarding passes, making the application useful beyond payments.

Google Wallet Security: How Customer Cards Are Protected

Google says the service uses several security measures, including tokenisation and encryption, to protect payment information.

Tokenisation means that a customer’s actual card number is not shared with the merchant during a transaction. Instead, a digital credential is used to process the payment.

Users who lose their phones can also use Google’s Find My Device service to remotely lock or erase the device, helping to protect information stored on it.

These features provide additional safeguards, although users should still protect their devices, use screen locks and monitor their bank statements for unfamiliar transactions.

NFC Terminal Shortage Could Slow Contactless Payments in Nigeria

Despite the launch, the widespread use of Google Wallet for in-store payments may face infrastructure challenges.

Contactless payments currently account for a small proportion of transactions in Nigeria, with estimates placing their share at around 0.1 per cent. Many point-of-sale terminals used by merchants do not have NFC capabilities.

This means that customers may not be able to use the tap-to-pay feature at every shop or business that accepts card payments.

Merchants will need compatible terminals to accept contactless transactions, while wider adoption will depend on investment in payment infrastructure and greater consumer awareness.

For now, the service may offer more immediate convenience for online and in-app purchases where Google Pay is available as a payment option.

CBN Contactless Payment Limits in Nigeria

Nigeria’s existing Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) contactless payment guidelines include transaction and daily limits for contactless payments.

The reported limits are ₦15,000 per transaction and ₦50,000 daily without additional verification. Transactions above the applicable limits require further authentication, such as a PIN or biometric confirmation, in line with the relevant payment rules.

Customers should confirm the applicable limits and verification requirements with their banks, as the rules governing contactless payments may depend on the payment method and issuing institution.

Google Wallet Expands Nigeria’s Digital Payment Options

The launch of Google Wallet adds another option to Nigeria’s growing digital payments ecosystem, bringing together Google, local banks, Mastercard, Visa and payment technology providers such as Interswitch.

The service could make everyday payments more convenient for eligible Android users, particularly where merchants have installed compatible contactless terminals.

However, the extent of its adoption will depend on how quickly more banks support the service and how widely NFC-enabled payment infrastructure becomes available.

For now, eligible customers can download Google Wallet from the Google Play Store and check whether their bank cards are supported before attempting to make payments.
