Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has warned social media users against publishing or sharing false and defamatory statements about her, threatening legal action against those found liable.
Key Highlights
- Tope Alabi threatens lawsuits against social media users spreading false claims about her.
- Warning issued in a public notice by her lawyers, shared on Instagram on Friday, October 23, 2026.
- Liability could extend to those who repost or forward defamatory content.
- Anonymous accounts do not guarantee immunity, lawyers warn.
- Notice says truthful statements and fair comment remain protected.
The singer issued the warning in a public notice released by her lawyers and shared on her Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026.
In the notice, Alabi, whose full name is Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi, said she has instructed her legal team to protect her personal, professional and spiritual reputation against publications capable of causing damage.
Her lawyers stated that the gospel singer had spent nearly three decades building a reputation based on integrity, honour and public trust.
Reposting Defamatory Content Could Attract Liability
They warned that liability for defamatory content could extend beyond the original author to individuals who repost, forward or otherwise circulate the material on social media.
The legal team also cautioned users against assuming that anonymous accounts would protect them from possible legal consequences.
“The use of anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified accounts does not, of itself, confer immunity from legal liability,” the notice stated.
Social media users who had already published material considered defamatory were advised to remove it and stop further circulation.
However, the lawyers explained that deleting a post would not automatically eliminate potential liability for its earlier publication.
According to the notice, Alabi could pursue legal remedies, including damages, injunctions, retractions, public apologies and legal costs, where applicable.

Free Expression Not Targeted, Lawyers Say
The legal team, however, clarified that the warning was not intended to suppress legitimate criticism or restrict freedom of expression.
They noted that truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest and the lawful exercise of freedom of expression remained protected under the law.
“Nothing in this Notice is intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest, or the lawful exercise of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by law,” the lawyers stated.
The notice did not name any specific social media users facing legal proceedings.
The development highlights the potential legal consequences of publishing and circulating unverified or defamatory claims about public figures online.
Alabi is one of Nigeria’s prominent gospel singers, widely recognised for her Yoruba gospel music and longstanding contributions to the Nigerian gospel music industry.
