The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has highlighted the growing contribution of Nigerians living abroad to the country’s economy, saying monthly diaspora remittances are approaching $1 billion. The commission described the inflows as an important source of support for households and businesses, while pointing to increased diaspora investment in key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
In a statement issued on October 20, 2026, and signed by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM commended Nigerians abroad for continuing to support their families and invest in the country despite recent economic challenges.

NiDCOM Commends Nigerians Abroad for Remittances
NiDCOM Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praised Nigerians in the diaspora for sustaining financial support to families and contributing to economic activity at home.
She encouraged them to maintain their contributions, noting that remittances help households meet essential expenses, support small businesses and create opportunities across different communities.
The commission said the reported monthly inflows demonstrate the important role Nigerians abroad play in supporting the domestic economy.
The commission had previously said, citing Central Bank of Nigeria data, that monthly remittance inflows had tripled to about $600 million, with Dabiri-Erewa expressing optimism that the figure could reach $1 billion a month by 2026.
However, remittances sent to families should be distinguished from direct investment in businesses, as the two contribute to the economy through different channels.
Diaspora Investments Expand Across Key Sectors
Beyond money transfers, NiDCOM said Nigerians abroad are increasingly investing in sectors including healthcare, agriculture, food processing and information and communication technology (ICT).
Such investments can support business expansion, create employment opportunities and bring technical knowledge and professional expertise into Nigeria.
The commission said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to improve engagement with Nigerians abroad and encourage more of their capital and skills to contribute to national development.
NiDCOM Links Remittances to Economic Reforms
The commission also pointed to economic policy changes under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market.
NiDCOM acknowledged that these measures have presented challenges but described them as steps intended to address longstanding economic distortions.
It also cited the country’s external reserves and reported remittance inflows as encouraging indicators.
While remittances provide foreign exchange and support household spending, the scale of their wider economic impact also depends on exchange-rate conditions, transfer costs and how the funds are used.

Diaspora Engagement Programmes Target More Investment
NiDCOM said it continues to engage Nigerians abroad through initiatives such as the annual National Diaspora Day celebrations, the Nigerian Diaspora Investment Summit and the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC), including its recent event in Canada.
The programmes are designed to connect diaspora communities with investment opportunities, strengthen relationships with Nigerian businesses and encourage the transfer of capital, knowledge and expertise.
The commission pledged to continue working with public and private-sector stakeholders to improve investment processes and strengthen participation by Nigerians abroad.
Diaspora Remittances Remain Important to Nigeria’s Economy
Remittances are an important source of financial support for many Nigerian households and can contribute to foreign-exchange inflows and domestic economic activity.
NiDCOM’s latest statement underscores the government’s interest in sustaining these flows while encouraging Nigerians abroad to invest directly in productive sectors.
The long-term benefits will depend on reliable data, efficient financial transfer systems, investor confidence and policies that make it easier for diaspora communities to establish or expand businesses in Nigeria.
