Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticised supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for attacking Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso following their decision to pursue separate political paths ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Key Highlights

  • Shehu Sani says ADC supporters are bitter over the Obi-Kwankwaso split from the alliance.
  • He rejects claims that both men are working for President Tinubu and the APC.
  • The ADC campaign council accused Kwankwaso of advancing Tinubu’s interests.
  • The row followed Kwankwaso’s call for Atiku to withdraw from the race in favour of Obi.
  • The council says Kwankwaso is already positioning for 2031.

Sani said allegations that the two politicians were working for President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reflect the frustration of ADC supporters over the breakdown of their political alliance.

The former lawmaker made the remarks in a post on his verified X account, while reacting to accusations by the ADC Presidential Campaign Council that Kwankwaso is advancing Tinubu’s political interests.

“The ADC guys are still bitter about the Peter and Kwankwaso divorce, hence the smear that they are working for the ruling party or the president,” Sani wrote.

He argued that Obi and Kwankwaso were accomplished politicians with independent political records who should be free to make their own decisions about political alliances without facing hostility from former associates.

According to him, politicians should be allowed to associate with or disengage from political groups without being subjected to attacks.

‘Disposable Cargoes’

Sani further accused some political actors of treating political allies as disposable assets, arguing that Obi and Kwankwaso were being criticised for refusing to remain in arrangements that no longer suited their political interests.

“This is the price they will continue to pay for refusing to be supplementary, and disposable cargoes in someone’s container,” he stated.

The former senator also warned political parties against adopting practices that prevent members from leaving alliances peacefully.

“Political parties shouldn’t be cultish groups where one can’t pull out in peace,” he added.

ADC Campaign Council’s Allegations

Sani’s comments followed a statement by the ADC Presidential Campaign Council accusing Kwankwaso of undermining opposition efforts ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The controversy arose after Kwankwaso called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the presidential race in favour of Obi.

The ADC campaign council described the intervention as reckless and self-serving, arguing that it could weaken the opposition’s efforts to challenge Tinubu and the APC.

Atiku is the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, while Kwankwaso is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Obi as its presidential candidate.

In a statement issued on Friday, the council’s Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Kwankwaso’s remarks during an interview on Channels Television suggested that he is more interested in weakening opposition leaders than challenging the ruling party.

Ologbondiyan also dismissed concerns that Atiku would struggle to win Kano State without Kwankwaso’s support, citing the victories of former President Muhammadu Buhari in the state during the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections.

The council maintained that economic hardship, hunger, poverty and insecurity would be major issues shaping voters’ decisions in 2027.

It further alleged that Kwankwaso is already positioning himself for the 2031 presidential election rather than concentrating on the immediate political challenges facing the opposition.

“What Kwankwaso is doing amounts to advancing President Tinubu’s interests. It is a familiar APC strategy to use willing collaborators within the opposition to create confusion, sow division and weaken the collective efforts to bring about political change,” Ologbondiyan said.

The exchange highlights growing disagreements among opposition figures as political parties and their leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
