The Federal Government has proposed a harmonised examination calendar for 2027, with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled for March and a target of releasing West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO) and other external examination results by August. The proposal is aimed at reducing delays in university admissions and helping students transition from secondary school to tertiary institutions without missing admission deadlines.

Key Highlights

  • Federal Government proposes moving the 2027 UTME to March.
  • WAEC and NECO results are expected to be released by August 2027 under the proposed framework.
  • The harmonised calendar also covers NABTEB and NBAIS examinations.
  • NECO’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) is scheduled to take place before WAEC’s WASSCE in the proposed timetable.
  • The initiative is being implemented under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
  • The government says the reform is intended to reduce examination timetable clashes and admission delays.
  • The proposed schedule targets a more coordinated transition into tertiary institutions from September 2027.
  • The examination dates and results deadlines should be treated as proposed arrangements pending confirmation through official examination-body timetables.

FG Proposes Harmonised 2027 Examination Calendar

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, announced the proposal as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve coordination among Nigeria’s examination bodies.

The initiative falls under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), led by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa.

According to reports on the announcement, the government wants examination bodies to coordinate their schedules and results-processing timelines to prevent avoidable delays affecting candidates seeking admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The proposed framework covers examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), WAEC, NECO, the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).

The government’s target is to ensure that candidates have their relevant examination results available before the main admission period progresses.

Proposed Dates for UTME, WAEC, NECO and Other Exams

The reported harmonised calendar contains the following proposed examination windows and results-release targets for 2027.

Examination bodyProposed examination datesTarget for results
JAMB — UTMEMarch 15–25, 2027March 2027
NECO — SSCEApril 1–May 14, 2027August 2027
WAEC — WASSCEMay 11–June 18, 2027August 2027
NABTEBJune 1–July 5, 2027August 2027
NBAISJune 10–July 9, 2027August 2027

These dates reflect the proposed schedule reported in the announcement and should not be treated as final examination timetables until confirmed by the respective examination bodies.

Why FG Wants NECO to Hold Before WAEC

One of the notable changes in the proposed calendar is the scheduling of NECO’s SSCE before WAEC’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Under the reported timetable, NECO examinations would begin in April and end in May, while WAEC examinations would run from May to June.

The arrangement is intended to give examination bodies a more coordinated schedule for conducting examinations, marking scripts and processing results.

However, the proposed dates show some overlap between the NECO and WAEC examination periods. The final timetable will therefore need to clarify how the bodies intend to manage any clashes affecting candidates registered for both examinations.

August Results Deadline Targets Admission Delays

The proposed August deadline for releasing WAEC and NECO results is intended to address a longstanding concern among candidates seeking admission into higher institutions.

When examination results are delayed, candidates may struggle to complete admission requirements or meet deadlines set by universities and other tertiary institutions.

Students who sit for NECO as an alternative or additional qualification may be particularly affected if their results are unavailable when admission screening begins.

By targeting August for the release of external examination results, the Federal Government hopes to give candidates more time to meet admission requirements before the next academic session gets underway.

The proposed timetable also aims to create a more predictable schedule for students, parents, schools and tertiary institutions.

However, achieving the target will depend on examination bodies’ ability to conduct assessments, mark scripts, process results and complete quality-control procedures within the proposed period.

How the Harmonised Calendar Could Affect University Admissions

The government’s plan is intended to align secondary school examinations with the admission processes of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

If implemented successfully, the schedule could reduce uncertainty for candidates who need to combine their UTME scores with WAEC, NECO or other qualifying results.

A more coordinated calendar could also help tertiary institutions plan admission screening and communicate deadlines more clearly to prospective students.

However, the proposed examination timetable does not automatically guarantee that every institution will begin or complete admissions in September. Individual institutions will still operate within the applicable admission framework and their published schedules.

Candidates should therefore continue to monitor JAMB announcements and the official admission notices of their preferred institutions.

NESRI Framework Targets Greater Accountability

The harmonised examination calendar forms part of the Federal Government’s broader education reform agenda under NESRI.

The Ministry of Education has indicated that engagement with examination-body officials will be necessary to ensure compliance with the proposed timelines.

Meeting the August results deadline will require coordination across examination registration, question-paper preparation, examination administration, marking, moderation and final results processing.

Compressing these activities into shorter periods could place additional operational pressure on examination bodies. The success of the proposal will therefore depend on adequate planning, staffing, logistics and quality assurance.

The government’s stated objective is to make the examination and admission process more predictable while reducing delays that can disrupt students’ academic progression.

What Candidates Should Know About the 2027 Examination Changes

Candidates preparing for the 2027 examinations should take note of the proposed March UTME schedule and the August target for WAEC and NECO results.

However, students should not rely solely on the reported dates when making final examination arrangements.

JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS will need to publish or confirm their respective official timetables and registration requirements.

Candidates should also ensure that their registration details are accurate, prepare for examinations well in advance and monitor official announcements for changes to examination dates or admission procedures.

FG’s 2027 Examination Reform Awaits Official Timetable Confirmation

The proposed harmonised examination calendar represents an effort to coordinate Nigeria’s major examinations and reduce delays in the transition from secondary school to tertiary education.

Moving UTME to March and targeting August for the release of WAEC and NECO results could give candidates more time to complete admission requirements before the next academic session.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the plan will depend on implementation, coordination among examination bodies and confirmation of the proposed dates through official timetables.

For now, candidates, parents and schools should regard the reported dates as proposed arrangements and follow announcements from the relevant examination bodies for definitive guidance.
