Another Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centre in Kano State has reportedly withdrawn from a government-supported training programme and directed its trainees to stop reporting to the facility.

Key Highlights

  • A TVET centre in Kano State has reportedly withdrawn from the training programme.
  • The centre allegedly directed trainees to stay away from the facility.
  • Training activities have reportedly been suspended, leaving trainees uncertain about their future.
  • The centre’s owner reportedly expressed concerns about the support and arrangements surrounding the programme.
  • The development has raised fresh questions about the sustainability of government-backed TVET programmes.
  • The identity of the centre, number of affected trainees and specific reasons for the withdrawal were not immediately disclosed.
  • The relevant government agency is yet to publicly respond to the reported development.

Kano TVET Centre Suspends Training Activities

The development was reported on Tuesday morning by the Employment Update online platform, which said the centre had informed trainees that training activities had been suspended.

According to the report, trainees were directed to stop coming to the facility, leaving affected participants uncertain about whether the training would resume and what would happen to their ongoing programmes.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the ability of some TVET centres participating in government-supported skills acquisition initiatives to sustain their operations under existing arrangements.

TVET Centre Owner Raises Concerns Over Programme

A message reportedly attributed to the centre expressed frustration over the circumstances surrounding the training programme and the support available for the facility’s continued operation.

The owner of the centre was also quoted as saying, “I’m not running a charity organisation for the government,” apparently in reference to concerns about the centre’s involvement in the government-supported training programme.

The statement has raised questions about the financial and operational arrangements between participating training centres and the authorities responsible for the programme.

However, the specific issues that led to the centre’s reported withdrawal have not been independently established.

Trainees Face Uncertainty Over Training

The reported suspension has left affected trainees uncertain about their next steps, particularly whether training will resume at the centre or whether alternative arrangements will be made.

The number of trainees affected was not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

It was also unclear whether the trainees would be transferred to another accredited TVET centre or whether they would have to wait for further directives from the relevant authorities.

Questions Over Sustainability Of TVET Programme

The latest development adds to concerns about the sustainability of some Technical and Vocational Education and Training centres involved in government-backed skills acquisition initiatives.

TVET programmes are designed to equip participants with practical and technical skills that can improve employment and self-employment opportunities.

However, the continued participation of private and other training providers can depend on operational support, funding arrangements and other terms governing their involvement in government-supported programmes.

The reported withdrawal in Kano has therefore brought renewed attention to the need for clear and sustainable arrangements between government agencies, training providers and beneficiaries.

Government Agency Yet To Respond

The relevant government agency responsible for the programme is yet to publicly respond to the reported withdrawal as of the time of filing this report.

Further clarification is expected from the authorities and stakeholders involved, particularly on the status of the affected trainees and whether alternative arrangements will be provided.

Details about the identity of the TVET centre, its owner, the number of affected trainees and the specific reasons behind the withdrawal were also not immediately available.

Until an official response is issued, the circumstances surrounding the reported suspension remain subject to further clarification.
