The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Taraba State Wing, has welcomed Governor Agbu Kefas’ planned teachers’ welfare programme, saying improved remuneration, decent housing and better healthcare will boost teachers’ morale and improve service delivery across schools in the state.

NUT Taraba State Chairman, Nathan Solomon, made the remarks on Friday in Jalingo while reacting to the governor’s recent announcement of measures aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of teachers. Governor Kefas announced the Taraba Teachers’ Welfare, Professionalisation and Housing Programme, which is scheduled to begin in 2027.

  • The union said better pay could improve teachers’ morale and productivity.
  • Improved housing and healthcare were identified as key areas of concern.
  • Governor Agbu Kefas announced a Teachers’ Welfare, Professionalisation and Housing Programme for 2027.
  • A time-bound implementation committee is expected to consult teachers and their unions.
  • The proposed programme will examine welfare, professional standards, salary improvements and housing.
  • NUT urged the government to ensure timely implementation of its commitments.
  • The union pledged continued collaboration with the Taraba State Government on education reforms.

NUT Welcomes Taraba Teachers’ Welfare Programme

Solomon described the proposed welfare measures as a welcome development, saying better working conditions could motivate teachers and contribute to improved service delivery in schools.

He commended Governor Kefas for recognising the role of teachers in the development of the education sector and urged the government to ensure that the announced measures translate into concrete improvements in teachers’ conditions of service.

The governor’s Independence Day broadcast included plans for a Taraba Teachers’ Welfare, Professionalisation and Housing Programme beginning in 2027. The proposed initiative is expected to address teachers’ welfare and professional standards while also examining sustainable salary improvements and a housing scheme, particularly for rural and underserved communities.

Better Pay, Housing and Healthcare for Teachers

According to the NUT chairman, improved remuneration, access to decent housing and quality healthcare could help address some of the challenges confronting teachers in Taraba State.

“Improved remuneration, access to decent housing and quality healthcare would help address some of the challenges confronting teachers and demonstrate the government’s commitment to their wellbeing,” Solomon said.

He added that better welfare could contribute to increased motivation and productivity among teachers, with potential implications for the quality of education delivered to pupils and students.

NUT Urges Timely Implementation

While welcoming the announcement, Solomon called on the Taraba State Government to ensure timely implementation of the proposed welfare measures.

He said the effectiveness of the initiative would depend on translating the announced plans into practical improvements in the conditions of service for teachers.

The NUT chairman also called for continued engagement between the government and stakeholders in the education sector to ensure that policies designed to improve teachers’ welfare achieve their intended objectives.

Government, Teachers’ Union to Strengthen Collaboration

Solomon expressed confidence that sustained cooperation between the Taraba State Government and teachers’ unions would help strengthen the education sector and support better learning outcomes across the state.

He said the NUT remained willing to work with the government on initiatives aimed at improving the teaching profession and creating a more conducive learning environment.

The planned welfare programme is expected to involve consultations with teachers and their unions as the state works on professional standards, salary improvements and housing arrangements.

Taraba Teachers’ Welfare Programme: What to Expect

The governor’s announcement indicates that the proposed Taraba Teachers’ Welfare, Professionalisation and Housing Programme will focus on several areas, including:

  • Teachers’ welfare and working conditions
  • Professional standards
  • Sustainable salary improvements
  • Housing, especially in rural and underserved communities
  • Consultation with teachers and their unions

For the NUT, the priority now is ensuring that the proposed measures move from announcement to implementation and produce tangible improvements in teachers’ working conditions. For more updates, follow us on X.
