AT&T Acknowledges iPhone 18 Pro Max Cellular Problem
AT&T acknowledged the issue in a text message sent to customers on Thursday, according to MacRumors.
The carrier warned that some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on its network may be unable to complete calls, texts or data connections, including emergency calls to 911.
AT&T instructed affected users to go to Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27.0.1.
The acknowledgment follows a growing number of complaints from iPhone 18 Pro Max owners who say their devices intermittently or continuously lose AT&T cellular service.
iPhone 18 Pro Max Users Report SOS Mode
Users affected by the iPhone 18 Pro Max AT&T issue have reported problems making calls, sending messages and accessing mobile data.
In many cases, the device displays “SOS” in the status bar instead of connecting normally to the AT&T network.
Reports have appeared across the Apple Support Community, Reddit and MacRumors forums. MacRumors said the number of reports had reached at least thousands.
The problem does not appear to affect every iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, but the volume of reports prompted the carrier to issue its warning.
iOS 27.0.1 Has Not Fixed the Problem for Everyone
Apple released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week, but affected users say the update has not consistently restored their cellular service.
MacRumors reported that Apple’s release notes for iOS 27.0.1 do not specifically identify a fix for the AT&T cellular problem. The update was primarily associated with fixes involving issues on the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Some users have nevertheless reported that their modem firmware was updated alongside iOS 27.0.1, although cellular problems have continued for some customers.
Apple has not publicly confirmed what is causing the AT&T connectivity failures.
Qualcomm Modem Draws Attention
Another factor under scrutiny is the cellular modem used in the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone 18 model reported to use a Qualcomm cellular modem. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s C2 modem worldwide, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the C2 modem outside the United States.
However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that the Qualcomm modem is responsible for the AT&T problem.
The issue could instead involve software, network configuration or eSIM provisioning.
eSIM Problems Also Reported
Some iPhone 18 Pro Max owners have reported problems involving eSIM activation and network provisioning.
Earlier reports indicated that some customers lost AT&T connectivity after activating their new phones, with some devices repeatedly switching between cellular service and SOS mode.
In some cases, users said AT&T attempted to resolve the issue by refreshing or replacing the eSIM without permanently restoring connectivity.
These reports have added to uncertainty over whether the problem is primarily related to AT&T’s network, eSIM provisioning, the iPhone’s software or the device’s cellular hardware.
What AT&T Is Telling iPhone 18 Pro Max Users
For now, AT&T’s official instruction is straightforward: affected customers should install iOS 27.0.1 through the iPhone’s Software Update settings.
The carrier also advised customers with continued problems to contact AT&T or Apple.
However, because some users report that the update has not solved the problem, customers experiencing persistent SOS or failed connectivity may need further technical support.
AT&T’s own support documentation also provides troubleshooting options for cellular settings on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Apple Has Yet to Confirm the Cause
The central question remains what is causing the iPhone 18 Pro Max AT&T issue.
At present, there is no confirmed public explanation from Apple or AT&T identifying a specific hardware defect, software bug or eSIM problem as the root cause.
If the problem is ultimately determined to be software-related, a future iOS update could potentially address it. If hardware or network provisioning is responsible, a software update alone may not resolve every affected device.
For now, AT&T is urging customers to update to iOS 27.0.1, while reports from some users indicate that cellular failures are continuing. For more updates, follow us on X.
