Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration in a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
The minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.

Tunji-Ojo said peace and stability remained necessary conditions for national development, urging Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating commitment to the nation.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration would continue to pursue measures aimed at improving national security and public safety.
He said the government remains committed to creating an environment where citizens could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
Tunji-Ojo further called on Nigerians to see the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and contribute to building a better Nigeria for future generations.
He said the government’s efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda would seek to create a better Nigeria as a tribute to the nation’s past heroes.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.
