The Nigerian Army is making significant progress on Tinubu Barracks Phase II in Asokoro, Abuja, with construction of 1,000 housing units advancing towards a December 2026 completion target under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication and Spokesperson to the President, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following an inspection of the project site led by Major General Adetoro.

Tinubu Barracks Phase II Advances in Abuja
The inspection covered the hilly and undulating terrain where extensive earthworks have been carried out to prepare the site for the new barracks complex.
The project is designed to provide accommodation for approximately 1,000 military personnel and their families, with capacity for up to 6,000 residents across various ranks.
Officials described the development as one of the largest single military housing interventions currently being undertaken in Abuja.
Army Begins 1,000-Unit Housing Project
Construction of Tinubu Barracks Phase II began following the groundbreaking ceremony conducted by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu on December 24, 2025.
The project is separate from Phase I of the barracks, which was commissioned by President Tinubu on January 23, 2025, to provide accommodation for 614 personnel.
The second phase is expected to significantly expand the Army’s available residential capacity in the Federal Capital Territory.
More Than 5,000 Workers Involved in Construction
Dare highlighted the scale of work completed in less than nine months, noting that more than 5,000 skilled and unskilled workers have participated in the project.
He described the development as part of a broader shift from short-term repairs to the provision of durable accommodation for military personnel and their families.
The initiative is aligned with the Nigerian Army’s “Soldier First” agenda under Lieutenant General Shaibu, which places emphasis on the welfare and living conditions of personnel.

Army Links Housing to Troop Welfare
According to the Army leadership, improved accommodation can contribute to personnel morale, family stability and unit cohesion, particularly for troops returning from operational deployments.
The housing initiative is part of wider efforts to address accommodation challenges across the Nigerian Army.
These efforts include completing ongoing residential projects nationwide, approving interim 30-family residential blocks in each Army division and renovating existing barracks.
The Army’s welfare programmes also cover areas such as healthcare, education, insurance and post-service housing.

Dare described the project as an investment not only in physical infrastructure but also in the families supporting Nigerian military personnel.
He said the initiative demonstrated the administration’s commitment to providing better living conditions for those serving the country.

With construction progressing across the Asokoro site, the Tinubu Barracks Phase II project is targeted for completion in December 2026.
When completed, the 1,000-unit development is expected to provide additional housing capacity for Army personnel and their families in Abuja.
The project therefore represents a major component of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to improve military accommodation and strengthen its welfare infrastructure.
