Mbo Local Government Area women’s football team has won the gold medal at second edition of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.
The thrilling encounter in the soccer event witnessed team Mbo defeating Ibeno 8-7 on penalties in the final match on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Despite efforts from both teams, the regulation time ended 0-0 before Mbo triumphed on penalties in front of a large crowd.
Mbo have now retained the women’s football gold medal, having won the same crown in the 2025 edition of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival.
Ibeno settled for the silver medal after a dogged run, while Esit Eket bagged the bronze medal to complete the podium finish in the women’s football event.
The final match was well attended, with the Chairman of Mbo Local Government Area, Sunday Etim; Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Mr. Samuel Umoh, and board members; Chairman of Ibom Angels FC, Prince Ukeme Ukpong; members of the Ibom Angels FC technical crew; and other football stakeholders present.

There was also a special appearance by the president and executives of the Super Eagles Supporters Club, who led their band to play and charge up the atmosphere for the women’s final, a day after doing the same to help the Super Eagles to victory over Madagascar.
With the women’s event complete, attention will turn to the men’s finals on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Esit Eket will face Urue-Offong/Oruko in the third-place match at 10am, while Ikot Abasi will take on Okobo in the men’s final.
